Dr David Weeks as said that people in their later years (very tactful Dr Weeks) should be made aware of the benefits of a healthy sex life.
Dr Weeks said:
My message is that lovemaking is good.
He went on to say
The stereotype of an elderly person is that when they get their pension and bus pass, they stop having sex and that’s not true.
When we have sex the ‘feel good chemical’ endorphins are released. These act as a natural painkiller and reduces anxiety, so aiding sleep (this is why you are normally tired after sex).
In addition the exercise during sex causes a boost in circulation and so is good for the heart.
Sex also causes a release of the human growth hormone which makes the skin look more elastic.
According to Weeks:
Sexual satisfaction is a major contributor to quality of life, ranking at least as high as spiritual or religious commitment and other morale factors, so more positive attitudes towards mature sex should be vigorously promoted.
For his research Dr Weeks asked men and women questions regarding their sex lives. As described by the Telegraph:
He found those who looked younger than their age claimed to have sex an average 50 per cent more – in the 40-to-50 age group equating to three times a week rather than twice.
This has got to be good news for companies like us as surely there is a big market out there for sex toys for the older person.
However personally I am a bit offended that Dr Weeks classes anyone over 40 as elderly.
